Mary Elizabeth (CLIPFELL) LEMON Obituary

Ca. 1929- Unknown source

MRS. H. A. LEMON

Mary Elizabeth Clipfell was born at South Bend, Indiana, Oct. 23, 1872, and died at her home, 7112 Francis Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, May 23, 1929, at 8:30 p.m.

The family moved from South Bend to Redwood falls, Minnesota, in 1884, locating on a farm three miles east of town. This remained her home until her marriage.

She attended the Public schools at South Bend, and upon removal to Redwood Falls entered the High school of that place from which she was graduated in 1889. She then attended Drake university for two years, after which she spent two years at Northwestern Christian College at Excelsior, Minn. Later she went to the University of Minnesota, receiving the A.B. degree in 1898 and the A.M. degree in 1902. During all this time she was a great lover of music, and had taken special training on the piano while at Drake.

After receiving the A.M. degree, she taught the district school at home that she might be with her parents.

A change in the home life gave her greater liberty and she came to Cotner as head of the English department, which place she held for two years.

In August 1907 she was united in marriage to H.A. Lemon, and her home became and remained Bethany, now Lincoln, until the hour of her departure. To this union two sons were born, Carroll H. Lemon, and Paul C. Lemon.

She filled the place of mother to two step-daughters, Miss Hallie Lemon, missionary to Mexico; and Mrs. Guy Ward of Weeping Water.

Mrs. Lemon was an active member of the W.C.T.U. and the C.W.B.M. She also was much interested in the Women's Chorus of the Woman's Club.

At the age of 12 Mrs. Lemon had become a christian, being buried with her Lord in Christian baptism at the hand of Brother Leander Lane at her request on account of friendship formed at South Bend, Indiana. Mrs. Lemon was an ardent lover of Christ and His kingdom and sought continually to be of service both to the Church and the Bible School. Previous to the burning of the church, she was assistant organist, and she served the Bible School as teacher of a beginners class. Each Lord's day during her sickness, her class remembered her with some token, and expression of their love for her and hoped that she soon would be able to return to them. But this was not to be, even though Mrs. Lemon had been strong and hearty up to this time, the ravages of the awful disease made its inroad upon her vitality, and finally took her away.

Mrs. Lemon was a woman of remarkable talent, both natural and acquired, and her character was beyond reproach, and we all feel deeply the loss caused by her departure.

She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Brother H.A. Lemon, of Lincoln, Nebraska; her two sons, Carroll H. Lemon, and Paul C. Lemon also of Lincoln, Nebraska; her mother, Mrs. Hannah Clipfell, of Redwood Falls, Minn.; her two step-daughters, Miss Hallie Lemon of Mexico, and Mrs. Guy Ward of Weeping Water, Nebraska; and other relatives, a host of friends, and many neighbors, who join in deep sympathy with those sorrowing ones.
